Number Eight

Granite City, Illinois.
We took a mini-vacation trip to St. Louis. It wasn't exactly a Spring Break getaway- our destination gets the same weather Cincinnati does- just 24 hours earlier. And it snowed that weekend. I think we relied less on the news forecast and more on our hopes built from memories of past anniversary trips when deciding what clothes to pack, because we certainly weren't prepared for three inches of snow.

I blame the snow for the shift in our agenda. Up until the flakes began to fall, we were pretty much on schedule with the things we planned to do. After the snow covered our car and cracked the windshield, every activity seemed to have a less than desirable twist attached to it.

It was still a fun visit- I won't discredit that. We had fun, got to see a few cool things, got lots of free food (and lots of pricey food) and we enjoyed ourselves together as a family. The drive home, however, was not as pleasant. I was the only one who didn't get sick at some point during the last 24 hours, but I was suffering through some serious back pain (I still am 2 weeks later). What was supposed to an 11pm arrival at home turned into 7:30am the next morning, after an overnight layover in the emergency room in Carroll County, KY. Owen had another Febrile seizure in the car. If we had already been home, we would have been able to take care of it more easily, but since we were driving we didn't have as much control over the situation. We had no way to try to bring his fever down quickly. We backtracked 9 miles to the nearest hospital, and we put our son in the hands of the most thorough doctor in the Bluegrass State. He ordered tests for Owen all night long- "just to be sure of everything." Naturally, all Owen wanted to do was sleep. But we had to keep waking him up for blood draws and IVs and urine samples. At 1am, Nora was still wide awake. I took her for a drive to put her to sleep and Leslie tried to sleep in a chair in the ER with Owen. For roughly 3 and a half hours, Nora and I slept outside in the 34 degree parking lot. We woke to Les and Owen knocking on the window a little before 6am.

I would love it if the entire trip were on schedule, and I'd love it without all the vomiting. I would have also enjoyed more sunshine, more working trains and buses (we walked about 19 blocks because of a section of train track that was under repair- and buses were only going every 40 minutes). I could've done without the cracked windshield, the 3 hour wait to go up the Arch, or losing Owen for 3 minutes in a 600,000 square foot building. But you know, memories are made from experiences. Good or bad, we treasure what we remember.

It was another great year with a wonderful wife, and two awesome kids. I'll never forget that.

Some extra pictures:
The "Big Ben" from Pappy's Smokehouse. Ribs, Quarter Chicken, and two Sandwiches.

When we left Pappy's, the line to order was 30 minutes long. The line to wait to get in to the order line was about an hour. This place is a big deal, apparently. It was good, but I wasn't blown away.

This is the best shot I could get from my cell phone (I regret not taking my Canon to this place). This is a ten story spiral slide inside City Museum. Awesome place.

This is the sponge pit at City Museum. It's a very hard place to describe; the closest I would say would be a free-spirited giant playplace made by modern artists. There are 600,000 square feet of tunnels, slides, holes, and caves. Unlike at McDonald's, where you know where the playplace tunnel exit is, this place has a thousand options for every entrance.

Number Seven

Germantown, KY. It's just about as interesting as Ghent, WV. Our anniversary tradition is refining itself as the years go by. We now have two in a row with pictures in front of a Post Office (though I was covering the proof that the town starts with a G). Next year will probably continue that trend; it gives us more rules to follow.

My original plan was to visit Glen Ferris, WV this year, but it just didn't work out right- and I'm sortof glad it didn't. As we recalled our previous "G" visits, most have been insignificant little dots on a map. The only reason we went to most of them was to get a picture. Rarely do we ever spend money in the town. We just drive around, looking for a place to get a picture. And I'm sure the insignificance and lack of patronage will continue as rules from now on.

(By the way, Owen took this pic. Nora wasn't in last year's, so we thought this was fair)

So our time-adapted rules are as follows:
  • Every year on our anniversary, we must visit a town that starts with the letter G.
  • It must be a new G-town. No repeats.
  • We must get out of the car in the town.
  • We must get a picture.
  • The picture should include a sign with the name of the town.
If you'd like to keep score, here's the list so far:
Wedding Day: Georgetown, OH
Year 1: Gatlinburg, TN
Year 2: Goshen, IN
Year 3: Gallipolis, OH
Year 4: Grove City, OH
Year 5: Goodland, IN
Year 6: Ghent, WV
Year 7: Germantown, KY

Good Grief, Should I Just Delete This Blog?

This needs to be Leslie's blog responsibility. I'm doing a terrible job keeping up with it.

Let's see, what's happened since the last S&L post:

- We had an amazing Summer with camps, conventions, mission trips, and fun times.
- We left our jobs and our home in Sabina.
- We moved in with my parents.
- We went to Hawaii for a week.

Les, from now on, I'm handing this one over to you. Go nuts.

Here's a couple of S&L exclusive videos from Hawaii:

Easter Pics

Since I'm in an updating mood, here are some pictures from the Easter Egg hunt at the Neu's:

Number Six

I'm such a slacker. I should be just as pumped to keep this blog updated regularly as I am about my other one.

Leslie and I celebrated our 6th anniversary this month. Six years with such a wonderful woman! And now we have two amazing children to share our joy with. It doesn't feel like this long. It's hard for me to realize that it's possible that we've been married that long. It blows me away that I have friends my age who have already passed the 10 year mark (Ron & Tiffany rock!)... We are becoming the 30-something parents that I always associated with someone else. I guess it has to happen, so bring it on.

Les and I started an odd trend when we got married. We decided that every year on our anniversary, we would visit a town that begins with the letter "G."

This year (as part of our trip to Virginia), we chose Ghent, WV.
(Nora was asleep in the car.)

If you have any great suggestions for future "G-Spots" (sorry, couldn't resist), drop me a line. I don't know how, but I'm determined that #10 is going to be Greece.

Valentine's Getaway

Les and I went a little farther than White Castle this year. We went to Maysville, Kentucky. It felt a lot more like our anniversary; we went to our "first date" location, and we saw a play at the theater in which we were married.

The play was ok. I was really more excited about getting pictures of everything, since I brought my camera along. It was the first time we had been in the theater since we were married, and it was nice to mark the occasion with a nice little snapshot.

Snow Day Pics

I'ts hard to justify blogging on this site, and I hate that. So I guess I'll just make it a place for exclusive pictures... which really only means I pick a few not to upload to facebook. Kinda dumb, but I don't want to lose this domain, and I know a few family members only check this.

Yesterday, Owen and I walked around town taking pictures. We had a good time.

A couple more exclusives

These were from the second batch that got transferred to my laptop. Donald took them. Well done, young man. Well done.
